The DSAGC is partnering with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center to assist them in identifying families who may be interested in participating in a study on improving parent preparedness in IEP meetings. The goal is to support parents of children with Down syndrome as they prepare and engage in the IEP process. CCHMC is looking for 30 families of children with Down syndrome (grades K-5). The parents do not need to come to Children's to participate. It can all be done by phone and mail.
The procedure is as follows:
1. The family fills out a 10-item questionnaire to gauge knowledge and confidence about the IEP process.
2. The family is given an "IEP Toolkit" to complete. It
is written in a
workbook style and the parents actually fill out sections to help them
prepare for the IEP process.
3. After completing the toolkit, the family fills out the 10-item
questionnaire again (helping us to see if they feel more knowledgeable
and prepared.)
4. After the family has had their IEP meeting, there will be a brief phone interview with the family to gather reflections, suggestions that might improve the toolkit.
The families do not receive payment, but they do get to keep the Tookit. Families that have previously worked with Gretchen Carroll for support in the IEP process are not eligible to enroll. Any family that is interested in participating should contact Stephanie Hotze at 636-3881 or Stephanie.Hotze@cchmc.org
