NEW PARENTS AND FAMILY SUPPORT

The DSAGC receives requests for information regarding many different aspects of Down syndrome from parents and families of children with Down syndrome. These requests cover a variety of areas such as support for a parent whose child is having difficulty with behavior in school to a simple request for a handout on toilet training. Referrals are also made to other collaborating agencies that can provide supportive services. Contact Martha.

Parent to Parent Program

The purpose of the Parent To Parent Program (PTP) is to provide new families with emotional and informational support to assist them in the early days following their child's birth. The PTP Program matches and connects new families with mentoring families who have had the same experience. By pairing this new family with a mentor – one who has "been there"- a unique one-on-one relationship can be created which can provide the supports necessary at this sensitive time. Parents who have just learned that their baby has been born with Down syndrome are thrust into a world of uncertainty, mixed emotions, and confusion.

Oftentimes a baby with Down syndrome may require emergency medical care which only adds to the families' anxiety. Families are carefully matched specifically to their needs. Factors such as, geographic area, age of parents, birth order of baby, family structure, medical complications, multiple or single birth, etc., are all considered when creating a match of new parent and mentoring parent. The mentoring parent can provide a combination of emotional support and factual information in a casual and flexible relationship. The method of contact between the two families is mutually decided upon. Families can meet over the phone, in person, by email or whatever method is most comfortable for the new family.

Information Packets for Families

Hospital Packet – This packet is distributed to 40 area hospitals, special care nurseries, perinatal care programs, and geneticists. It provides an introduction to Down syndrome for new parents. Sensitive, yet informative, this packet includes information on medical issues, breastfeeding and an invitation to connect with other new families who can provide support.

Expectant Parent Packet – This packet gently guides the expectant parent through the new world of parenting a child with Down syndrome. The packet includes general information and resources that can address the issues expectant parents face when they learn their child will be born with a disability.

New Parent Packet - This packet is sent to new parents after they contact the DSAGC for the first time. It provides the family with information on parenting their child and discusses some of the feelings that parents may have after giving birth to a child with a disability.

Friend/Relative Packet - This packet provides accurate and up-to-date information to educate friends or family members and to dispel some commonly held misconceptions about Down syndrome. If friends and family members are better educated about Down syndrome they will be better able to help provide support at this sensitive time.

Espanol Packet – In order to meet the growing need for information for Spanish speaking families, we have created a packet of introductory information for new families in our community. Also included are resources and agencies that may provide assistance.

Grandparent Packet - This packet addresses the emotions that a grandparent may experience and provides tips and strategies on welcoming the new baby into the family. This information is helpful in dispelling the fears that grandparents may have for their grandchild and family.
