Dinner and DialogueThese meetings are held 3-4 times yearly and are catered towards adults with Down syndrome and their parents/caregivers. Topics are selected based on suggestions from family members. Previous topics have included “Moving Out”, Medicaid Buy-In program, Planning for the Future, and Project Search.
Adult Matters also offers classes in areas of mathematics/money management, communication, sexuality, cooking, etc. These sessions are held on weekday evenings throughout the year.
Six hours of training in public speaking, speech writing, and Power Point presentations allow adults with Down syndrome to speak out about their lives, interests, and abilities to a variety of groups in the community. If you are interested in joining the Speaker’s Bureau, contact Sally for more information.
This quarterly group is designed for parents and caregivers of adults with Down syndrome. It was created in order to provide them with the opportunity to network with one another, share resources, and discuss pertinent health-related issues that may affect adults with Down syndrome. Topics may include caregiver stress, dementia, “the groove”, self-talk, etc.
The aim with this retreat is to give the adult with Down syndrome an opportunity to go away for a weekend in order to evaluate how he or she may increase his or her level of independence. We take time to discuss the value of independence, as well as rehearse practical skills such as money management, cooking, home management, and personal safety. We also provide participants with the opportunity to try new leisure activities, such as yoga, Thai chi, gardening, crochet, etc.
Held annually for parents and adults with Down syndrome to learn about
current research regarding Down syndrome, health issues/concerns that
specifically affect individuals with Down syndrome, and health techniques
to integrate into one’s lifestyle.
