Our programs focus on therapeutic, recreational, educational and social opportunities for all ages. We tailor our offerings to reflect the need of our local families as we strive to provide valuable support and quality programs for those in our community.

 Circle Time with Mrs. Maggie 
Ages: 0 - 5
Date: every Thursday in October, November, December
Time: 9:30 - 10:00 am

Description: Come start your day with Mrs. Maggie! Participation in routine and group activities can help your child learn and grow. We will sing songs, read books, dance, work on greetings, review colors, weather, and other daily routines to enhance social and communicative skills. Benefits to participating in this program include building confidence through structure and repetition, strengthening social and listening skills, and enhanced coordination and rhythm (through song and dance).
Registration: Please register if you are interested in attending any or all of the circle times. I will send out weekly reminders, and you can join if it fits in your schedule.

 Early Matters Playgroup 
Ages: 0 - 5
Date: every Wednesday in October, November, December
Time: 10 - 11:30 AM

Cost: Free
Description: The Early Matters Playgroup is an opportunity for parents to socialize with each other while children interact and play together. Each playgroup will start with circle time (introductions and a welcome song) and the rest of the time will be spent as open play. Siblings are welcome to attend.
Registration: Registration is required. Please register if you are interested in joining us for one Wednesday or every Wednesday. We will send reminders out each week, and you can join if it fits into your schedule.
*Due to Covid-19 indoor restrictions, we are limiting each playgroup to 20 total participants at this time.

 IEP 101 Workshop 
Ages: parents of children who started preschool this year or will in 2022

Description: This class will introduce you to the IEP process. You will learn the basics of developing this vital document, discuss the breakdown of what to consider when creating appropriate goals, and outlining what kinds of services the schools may provide. Bring your IEP questions and concerns to discuss matters of education, inclusion, and how to best advocate for your student.

 Crawl, Walk and Roll into Fall – A Gross Motor Mini-Series

Description: Come enjoy a fall themed gross motor mini-series while working with certified physical and occupational therapists from the new Associates in Pediatric Therapy center in Northern Kentucky! This mini-series will educate parents to have a better understanding of gross motor milestones and empower them to help their child reach those milestones through play-based activities they will be able to do at home!

 STEM 101 – a toddlers first peak into the wonderful world of science!

Description: In this STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) based activity series, kids will have the opportunity to learn through observation, experiments, exploration, and play! This class will be structured to engage children in new activities while also encouraging them to use their imagination!
Learning Objectives:
• Peak curiosity through hands on exploration and observation.
• Encourage independent problem solving.
• Observe how communication effects their environment through different experiments and activities.

Description: This workshop will offer many resources for grieving people and helping parents and/or professionals. You might be looking for ways to explain the death in your family or information on how to prepare for a funeral. Learning the words to use can be difficult but so important when dealing with death. Their resources will guide you as you support your family.
Learning Objectives:
• Articulate the understanding of death at various ages and developmental stages
• Identify common expressions of grief throughout childhood and adolescence
• Identify 10-12 interventions for supporting children and adolescents with their grief
• Identify strategies to support adults raising children who are grieving
Class Instructors: Katie Beurket, Program Coordinator - Katie is the director of the outreach program at Fernside and coordinates two community support groups as well as managing all social media marketing platforms. She has been involved in Fernside as a participant, volunteer, facilitator, and now staff member.
Sally Ries, Program Coordinator - Sally is the volunteer coordinator at Fernside and coordinates two community support groups as well as managing our relationship with Hamilton County DDS. Sally has been involved at Fernside as a participant, volunteer, facilitator, and now staff member.

 Family Baking with Chef Jordan and Chef Daniel

Date: 2nd Tuesday of the month (October 12, November 9, and December 14)

Description: Join Chef Jordan & Chef Daniel in this fun virtual baking class where we'll be working on activities of daily living such as measuring, stirring, and other cooking skills. Our fine motor skills, those involving small muscles of the hands and fingers, will be enhanced while baking up a tasty treat! An added bonus of these virtual classes is that you will be practicing cooking in your own kitchen with your own appliances and utensils!

 Family Cooking with Chef Miles

Description: Join Chef Miles in this virtual cooking class where we will create something delicious!  While learning about kitchen tools, ingredients, and recipes, we will also be working on a variety of fine motor skills and sequencing. Participating in our cooking classes is another avenue to work on cognitive skills and sensory development.  Parents of children 0-5 years old, if you would like to interact with some of the class participants prior to class starting, please join the zoom meeting 10 minutes early.

 Family Bingo

Description: Families of all ages are invited to play a few rounds of Bingo each month! Playing Bingo is fun and also strengthens important skills like recognition, observation, concentration, and turn-taking.

Description: Join the DSAGC running/walking group led by, Mike Smith "Smitty", for a 6-week training program leading up to the Pigabilities Race (which is part of the Flying Pig Marathon). Smitty will focus on many aspects of health and exercise, especially walking and running techniques. Any level of fitness may join, so please register with a friend or relative who is at your same pace so you can enjoy the training course safely together. The Pigabilities event is “virtual” this year, so we will run together as a group on Saturday, October 30.
Registration: Registration is required. $20 includes your entry into the Pigabilities.

DS/ASD Support Group
In an effort to support families with loved ones who have or who suspect to have a dual diagnosis of Down syndrome and autism (ASD), the DSAGC is offering a newly formed support group for parents and caregivers. The goal of this group is to connect families to help support one another by talking through challenges and successes while guided by a qualified group facilitator. Participants will benefit from the facilitator’s knowledge of strategies to help in extra stressful situations. They will be able to encourage each other as caregivers and can share and learn firsthand about resources to help in the many stages of this journey.

 Magnified Giving

Description: The Magnified Giving program provides curriculum, training, resources, and support to encourage service-learning and philanthropy education. We believe in youth and their ability to give time, talent, and treasure to support our communities. Participants get to learn about charity and generosity, and together, choose one local nonprofit to receive a grant of more than $1,000.

 Mixed Martial Arts - Teen 
Ages: 13 – 17

Description: Join us at Club MMA to move, learn, and have fun with Coach Jeff Robison! He will lead you through a variety of moves that will improve balance and coordination. This class will also help with body awareness and physical strength. As always, all skill levels are welcome.

 Managing Behaviors 
Ages: for parents of elementary & middle school children

 Cheerleading 
Ages: Kindergarten – 12th Grade
*We will have two cheer squads (one in Kentucky and one in Ohio). However, cheerleaders can participate in any and all practices and performances.

Description: Coaches Debbie Schroeder (former Ben-Gal) and Joanie Elfers lead the DSAGC Cheer Squad! Cheerleaders will attend three practices to learn a dance routine. Throughout the high school basketball season, cheerleaders will have the opportunity to perform the routine at various varsity games across the tri-state alongside high school cheerleaders. All cheerleaders get a uniform (to be returned) and pom poms. Our cheer squad is a fun way to stay active while bringing positive awareness to our community!

 Movement Warriors – A Gross Motor Mini-Series

Description: We will work on enhancing gross motor skills in a therapy-based setting! Certified therapists will work with your child on mobility, movement, body mechanics, balance, and much more while having fun completing various obstacle courses.

 USA Ninja Warrior Social Outing

Description: Join us for a fun day at USA Ninja Challenge! You’ll get to have fun with some friends while completing ninja warrior obstacle courses. Participants will take part in exciting activities similar to gymnastics, climbing, cross training, and more! Each participant with Down syndrome should bring one guest (friend or family member) who can accompany them throughout the event to help with safety.

 Reds Game (Disability Awareness Day)

Description: Adults with Down syndrome can sign-up for TWO free, lower level tickets to the Cincinnati Reds vs. Nationals game! Tickets include a Food & Beverage credit as well. Thank you to Chris Collier and Westpoint Financial Group for donating the tickets and concession credits! Note, there will not be DSAGC staff or volunteers at this game.

Description: Come meet our new Adult Matters Coordinator, Stephanie Bare, while checking out our new Empowerment center and eating ice cream sundaes. This is open to adults with Down syndrome as well as their families. Stephanie is eager to meet families, so she can know how to best serve them in the future.

 Leisure Exploration 
Ages: 18 & up
Dates/Times: Wednesday, October 6 (6:30 - 8 pm)
Saturday, October 23 (10 am), Saturday, November 6 (10 am), Saturday, November 20 (10 am), Saturday, December 4 (10 am), Wednesday, December 15 (6:30 pm)
Location: DSAGC (4623 Wesley Avenue, Suite A Cincinnati, OH 45212) and various attractions within the Greater Cincinnati area.

Description: This series will allow adults with Down syndrome the opportunity to explore a variety of leisure activities in the community. There will be an information meeting (Oct 6) for both the adult with Down syndrome and parents/caregivers to discuss why it is important to participate in leisure activities and how to make time for them in your daily life. At the meeting, each person will choose their preferred activities and a schedule will be created based off their selections. The activities will take place either at the DSAGC or at local attractions. After each leisure activity, participants will be able to identify what they liked about the activity, what they didn’t like, and how they can continue the activity if interested.
Activities include: rock climbing, hiking, games, music, cookie decorating, reading, dance, yoga, art museum, and more!

Description: Calista Hargrove, MSOL, VP of Programs, Cincinnati Works. Calista is an experienced, results-oriented organizational development professional, with a record of achievement in strategic thinking and problem solving in developing and managing workforce development and post-secondary educational support services for individuals with economic disadvantages and/or disabilities.   

Thursday, October 7 | Introduction to Employment Readiness
This class is for the adult with Down syndrome and their parents/caregivers. Employment success and finding a job will be discussed. Also, a panel of employees with Down syndrome will discuss their experiences in the workforce.
Thursday, October 14 | Character Strengths
This class is for the adult with Down syndrome and their parents/caregivers. This class will focus on each individual’s strengths and how those strengths can complement the skills needed for their dream and starter jobs.
Thursday, October 21 | What does it mean to have a Job?
This class is for the adult with Down syndrome. They’ll work with professionals to discuss the importance of a job, what a job means to them, their goals, and how to tell their story!
Thursday, October 28 | Professionalism & Preparation
This class is for the adult with Down syndrome. They’ll learn skills in preparation for the workforce including professionalism, interview techniques, resume building, etc.
Thursday, November 4 | Mock Interviews
This class is for the adult with Down syndrome. We will host mock interviews and provide valuable feedback.
Thursday, November 11 | Employment Networking Night
This class is for the parent/caregiver, adults with Down syndrome, community professionals, and more. We will learn more about the benefits of an inclusive workforce, hear from employees with Down syndrome and their employers, and connect with fellow professionals interested in hiring!

Date: Second Wednesday of every month (October 13, November 10, and December 8)

Description: Join Stephanie Bare, Adult Matters Coordinator and Speech-Language Pathologist, and Emma Daniels, Adult Matters Engagement Coordinator to get creative and connect! We will express ourselves through writing, drawing, art and more.

Description: This workshop will offer many resources for grieving people and helping parents and/or professionals. You might be looking for ways to explain the death in your family or information on how to prepare for a funeral. Learning the words to use can be difficult but so important when dealing with death. Their resources will guide you as you support your family.
Learning Objectives:
• Articulate the understanding of death at various ages and developmental stages
• Identify common expressions of grief throughout childhood and adolescence
• Identify 10-12 interventions for supporting children and adolescents with their grief
• Identify strategies to support adults raising children who are grieving
Class Instructors: Katie Beurket, Program Coordinator - Katie is the director of the outreach program at Fernside and coordinates two community support groups as well as managing all social media marketing platforms. She has been involved in Fernside as a participant, volunteer, facilitator, and now staff member.

Participating in our cooking classes is another avenue to work on cognitive skills and sensory development.  Parents of children 0-5 years old, if you would like to interact with some of the class participants prior to class starting, please join the zoom meeting 10 minutes early.

 DSAGC Running/Walking Group

Description: Join the DSAGC running/walking group led by, Mike Smith "Smitty", for a 6-week training program leading up to the Pigabilities Race (which is part of the Flying Pig Marathon). Smitty will focus on many aspects of health and exercise, especially walking and running techniques. Any level of fitness may join, so please register with a friend or relative who is at your same pace so you can enjoy the training course safely together. The Pigabilities event is “virtual” this year, so we will run together as a group on Saturday, October 30.

In an effort to support families with loved ones who have or who suspect to have a dual diagnosis of Down syndrome and autism (ASD), the DSAGC is offering a newly formed support group for parents and caregivers. The goal of this group is to connect families to help support one another by talking through challenges and successes while guided by a qualified group facilitator. Participants will benefit from the facilitator’s knowledge of strategies to help in extra stressful situations. They will be able to encourage each other as caregivers and can share and learn firsthand about resources to help in the many stages of this journey.

Social Clubs

Open Hangouts

Our Empowerment Center is now available for Open Hangout! This is an opportunity for you, your family, and friends to utilize the space in your own way and at no cost. You will have access to the entire center, including the Sensory Room. The Empowerment Center is furnished with therapeutic equipment, a rock wall, swings, trampolines, climbing mats, toys, games, and electronics. Open Hangout is available for all ages and abilities!

Respite Day

Sunday, November 21

We are offering our first respite program on November 21 from 1 – 4 pm at the DSAGC Empowerment Center. This opportunity is for individuals with Down syndrome of all ages and their siblings. Parents/Caregivers can drop off their loved ones in the care of trusted, trained, and background checked volunteers. Parents/Caregivers are welcome to enjoy three hours to do whatever they please.

This opportunity is free, but registration is required.
