Program Overview - Winter 2024

Our programs focus on therapeutic, recreational, educational, and social opportunities for all ages and stages. We tailor our offerings to reflect the need of our local families as we strive to provide valuable support and quality programs for those in our community.

Empowerment Series

Empowerment Series typically occur once a week for 3 – 5 weeks. The classes build upon each other and are designed to empower individuals with Down syndrome to try a new activity or work on a skill. Registration is required. For most series, there is a one-time $20 fee to participate for the entire series. DSAGC families are welcome to use our Community Participation Fund to help cover the cost.

ABC Pediatric Therapy Winter Play Group

Ages: 0 - 3
Dates: Saturdays (February 3, 10, 17)
Time: 10 am – 11 am

Description: Please join us for 3 weekends in February to come and play together indoors when the weather is chilly! Each Saturday, we will have different pediatric therapists on site to engage with your children and answer any developmental questions you might have. We will focus on a different therapy each week: 1st week: physical therapy (gross motor), 2nd week: speech therapy, 3rd week: occupational therapy (fine motor).

Tumble Bees – Gymnastics Fundamentals

Ages: 2 – 5

Description: Tumble Bees is a gross motor development program with an emphasis of gymnastics. The Tumble Bee curriculum is designed so each activity plays a role in developing coordination, strength, spatial awareness, body control, and so much more. The activities are presented in a creative, non-threatening approach developed specifically to individualize the pace at which each child learns. In this four-week series, your child will be introduced to skills of gross motor development, strength and coordination, and early gymnastics fundamentals.  This class provides multiple opportunities to roll, jump, crawl, climb, and so much more. Parents are invited to accompany their child in class to assist with new concepts, be hands on with some skills, and get an up-close view of their child learning.

Soccer Shots

Ages: KID (ages 6 – 12) and TEEN (ages 13 – 17)

Description: Soccer Shots is an engaging children's soccer program with a focus on character development. They positively impact children's lives on and off the field through our best-in-class coaching, communication, and curriculum.

Horseback Riding

Ages:  KID (ages 6 – 11) and TEEN (ages 12 – 17)
Date:  Wednesdays (February 21 – March 20)

Location: Cincinnati Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship - 1342 US-50 Milford, OH  45150

Description: Adaptive Recreational Riding is taught in group lessons. Each class of two to four riders is led by instructors certified by PATH, Intl. Each rider is paired up with a volunteer horse leader and up to two volunteer side walkers.  Riders will improve flexibility, strength, posture, and the ability to change their weight distribution on the horse as needed.

Lifelong Learning Lab: Reading

Ages: 22+

Description: Our Lifelong Learning Labs are designed for those who have graduated high school and are looking to continue working on their educational skills. Our instructor will work on reading skills with participants through a variety of functional activities.

Healthy Living

Ages: 18+
Date: Thursdays (March 21 – April 4)

Description: Each week, experts in physical health, mental health, and nutrition will provide hands-on learning opportunities. These classes will allow adults with Down syndrome to learn fun exercises, how to practice mindfulness, and participants will have the opportunity to make healthy food choices with a buffet dinner.

Walking Club

Our walking club is open to families of all ages! Coach “Smitty” will work with interested families in creating a schedule and meeting spot! If interested, email smithmi@zoomtown.com.  


Enrichment Classes

Enrichment Classes focus on increasing knowledge about a particular topic or enhancing a specific skill. These classes are different from our Empowerment Series because there is only one class to attend rather than a "series" of classes. Registration is required. Most of our enrichment classes are free or charge a very small registration fee.

Play with the Pros

Ages: 0-17 (siblings welcome)

Description: “Play with the Pros” is a non-directive approach to provide parents with therapeutic information. Parents and child(ren) are free to play in their own way like any playgroup. A trained therapist will observe and help you with any OT/PT concerns you may have at your request. By observation and with input from you, the therapists can give ideas for next steps to aide in enhancing your child’s fine/gross motor skills.

Interactive Toilet Training

Description: Join the “Mama Coach”, Kerry, as she teaches an interactive class on potty training. During this class, you will learn basic bowel & bladder anatomy, the signs of potty training readiness, the process to a child-led approach to toilet learning, and how to handle setbacks and complications. There will also be time for questions at the end!

Project Search/ CareerX Presentation

Description: Come learn about Project Search and CareerX!  Are these programs a good fit for my student? How does my student qualify and apply?  Representatives from the program will be here to present and answer questions.

Project SEARCH is a unique workforce development program designed for students with disabilities. The program is a one-year program designed to provide you with a variety of worksite experiences.  During the school year you will rotate through two or three different internships and learn the skills of that career.  Each experience will help build the skills you need for the world of work. 

CareerX is a Career Exploration and Employability Skills program for students with special needs. It is an entry-level transition high school program to assist students in making career choices.  The curriculum will cover Career Exploration and Employability Skills.  Each student will explore 5 career areas through a series of activities and demonstrate industry appropriate employability skills. The outcome of this series of activities for each student will be to narrow their interests, skills and aptitudes in order to move to their next transitional step toward competitive employment.   

CareerX is for high school seniors or students who have deferred their diploma. Project Search is for students who have deferred their diploma. However, we invite all high school students and families who might be interested to attend. Project Search and Career X serve students in most DSAGC Ohio counties (please check here to see if your local school district qualifies: https://www.greatoaks.com/about/affiliated-districts ).

Dress for Success Serve and Learn

Description: Join us at Dress for Success (just a few doors down from our office) for a time of volunteer work and education.  First, we will volunteer in their warehouse sorting donations.  Then, we will learn from the Dress for Success HigherHer program with a focus on soft employment skills.

College Tours – NKU SHEP Program and UC’s TAP Program

Description: Did you know we have two great post-secondary options here in Greater Cincinnati? Northern Kentucky University’s SHEP Program and University of Cincinnati’s TAP Program. Together, we will tour both campuses and learn about the programs available to students with disabilities.

Kindness Crew – February

Description: The “Kindness Crew” is a volunteering group for adults with Down syndrome to give back to the community. For this event, we will be wrapping diapers for Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank. Participants must wear close-toed shoes and complete a waiver. All materials, instruction, and snacks provided. Family and friends are encouraged and welcome to join us! Please register for each participant.

Kindness Crew - March

Description: The “Kindness Crew” is a volunteering group for adults with Down syndrome to give back to the community. Description: Join Chef Jordan & Chef Daniel at Tablespoon Cooking Co. for this fun kitchen skills cooking class where we'll be working on activities of daily living such as measuring, stirring, and other cooking skills.  Our fine motor skills, those involving small muscles of the hands and fingers, will be enhanced while cooking a delicious meal! All ingredients will be provided by Tablespoon Cooking Co.

Transitioning from Pediatric to Adult Medical Care

Description: Have you ever wondered what’s next for your young adult after seeing your pediatrician for these many years?  We know this uncertain time of transition can be stressful and challenging.  Please join us to learn about transitioning your loved one from pediatric to adult medical care.   Information will be geared towards parents and individuals with DS entering adulthood or those whose adult loved-ones would like to learn about comprehensive care going forward. We will also touch on some of the disparities in healthcare for our loved ones and how to best advocate for the best healthcare outcomes.  This program will be facilitated by Kristin Harmeyer, Community Navigator and Dr. Emily Johnson at the Timothy Freeman, MD Center for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, UC Cincinnati. *Dr. Johnson can also assist with our Spanish Speaking families.

Fall Prevention Workshop/ Balance Screenings

Description: Falls are a leading cause of injury, especially as we age. Adults with Down syndrome may have decreased balance, strength, or vision issues that can contribute to increased falls at a younger age. During this workshop, adults will go through balance screening tests performed by licensed physical therapists, Kelsey Haynes PT, DPT and Stephanie Dailey PT, DPT. Following the balance screen, participants will be provided with resources to assist with improving balance to decrease incidence of falls and potential injury.

VIRTUAL - Family Bingo

Description: Families of all ages are invited to play a few rounds of Bingo each month! Playing Bingo is fun and strengthens important skills like recognition, observation, concentration, and turn-taking.

VIRTUAL - Baking with Chef Jordan and Chef Daniel

Description: Join Chef Jordan & Chef Daniel in this fun virtual baking class where we'll be working on skills such as measuring, stirring, and cooking. Our fine motor skills, those involving small muscles of the hands and fingers, will be enhanced while baking up a tasty treat! A bonus of these virtual classes is that you will be practicing cooking in your own kitchen with your own appliances and utensils!

VIRTUAL - Cooking with Chef Harvey

Description: Join Chef Harvey in this virtual cooking class where we will create something delicious!  While learning about kitchen tools, ingredients, and recipes, we will also be working on a variety of fine motor skills and sequencing. Participating in our cooking classes is another avenue to work on cognitive skills and sensory development.

Social Opportunities

Social Opportunities occur on occasion and include various learning components, but focus heavily on social networking and building relationships. Registration is required for each individual social. At times there may be a cost associated, but the majority of these opportunities are free.

Respite Care

Ages: all ages (siblings welcome)

Description: Our respite care provides parents with short-term care services in a safe, supportive, and structured setting. After drop-off, parents will have three hours to themselves to do whatever they please! Our “care assistant” volunteers are trained and must pass a background check.

Description: Does your loved one have a dual diagnosis of Autism and Down syndrome? Join us at the DSAGC Empowerment Center for an easy, relaxed family playdate. Connect with other parents and encourage playful interactions with other children/teens/adults with co-occurring diagnoses in a welcoming, comfortable environment. Light refreshments provided. Early Matters Play Group

Ages: 0 – 5 (whole family is welcome)

Description: The Early Matters Playgroup is an opportunity for parents to socialize with each other while children interact and play together. Each playgroup will start with circle time (introductions and a welcome song) and the rest of the time will be spent as open play. Siblings are welcome to attend.

Volleyball Party

Let’s Get Fancy

“Let's Get Fancy” is a pre-Winter Dance pampering event for teens and adults with Down syndrome. Professionals will be on-site for make-up, hair, and nails .... then we take a limo ride to the dance! Note, you must purchase a ticket to the dance to attend.

Singles Mixer

Description: By request, we are excited to host our third singles mixer! This mixer will be open to all adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are single and interested in dating. It will be an informal event where individuals are encouraged to make connections with new people. We highly encourage parents and caregivers to allow adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to decide whether they would like to participate in this event.

Tutoring in Your Town

WINTER SESSION: Thursdays (Feb 1 - March 7)
Tutoring in Your Town is a program designed to offer individualized tutoring services during the school year to students with Down syndrome. Each session will be 1:1 with a certified education professional and tailored to the parent/caregiver desires. There are four tutoring locations to choose from throughout Greater Cincinnati.

T.E.L.L. Program

WINTER / SPRING SESSION: Mondays (Jan 22 – Apr 15)
T.E.L.L stands for Teaching Engagement and Lifelong Language. This program is for adults with Down syndrome and focuses on enhancing communication by providing useful, beneficial, and individualized support for each participant. The goal is to increase individual progress to effectively communicate wants and needs. The class is led by University of Cincinnati Speech-Language Pathology graduate students under the supervision of licensed Speech-Language Pathologist, Kendra Thornock.

Find Your Way Program

Find Your Way is a new collection of programs focusing on self-determination in adults with Down syndrome. These programs will be geared towards increasing personal independence by putting a strong focus on individual goals and progress tracking.

2024 Consultations

Ages: parents/caregivers of adults with Down syndrome
Date: January 15, 2024 – February 29, 2024
Time: scheduled individually with Young Adult Coordinator

Description: Individuals with Down syndrome, parents/caregivers, and our adult coordinators will work together to determine which of the four programs would be most beneficial for the coming year. Completion of a 2024 Find Your Way consultation is MANDATORY to participate in Find Your Way programming during 2024. Once you register for a FYW consultation, the young adult coordinator will reach out to you to schedule your appointment.

Tune Up Classes

Description: Find Your Way Tune-Ups are a collection of life skills classes to help young adults improve their self-determination and independence skills. These allow young adults to gain experience with the skills that they will need to live more independently. Tune Ups will cover a variety of different topics including meal preparation and cooking, transportation, shopping, scheduling appointments, laundry, housecleaning, budgeting, and more. Please sign up for each Tune Up class individually. You may sign up for and participate in Tune Up Classes prior to the completion of your FYW consultation.

Down Syndrome & Dementia Conference

Down syndrome and dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, is a major area of concern for aging adults with Down syndrome. However, there is a lot of misunderstanding around the topic. The DSAGC is bringing in two of the leading national experts from the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices to lead a one-day workshop for parents, adult siblings, and other family members who have a loved one with Down syndrome. This isn’t just for families who currently have a loved one with dementia, but for families who want to understand the topic and be better prepared if they should have challenges in the future.

Aging Focus Groups

Tuesday, March 19 (6 - 7:30 PM)  - OR - Saturday, March 23 (9:30 - 11 AM)
These focus groups are intended to better understand the needs of our aging adults and their families while creating an empathetic environment to connect and share. Focus Groups will be held at the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati office (4623 Wesley Avenue Suite, A Cincinnati, Ohio 45212).
